In a practical way I find the following pattern of prayer to be helful as it guides me through my daily prayer time. For me it has always been a good discipline to have a definite and assigned place to meet God each day. Once there, I have journeyed through my intercession in the following manner.
The prayer of confession. This is the place to begin. After all, the Bible says: “The Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; nor His ear heavy, that it cannot hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that he will not hear“(Is 59:1,2). The Psalmist said: “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear” (Psalm 66:18). So the place to begin in prayer is with 1 John 1:9 in confession of our sin. Our “sin” is dealt with on Calvary(1 John 1:9). Perhaps there are sins of tongue, things we have said, the need to be confessed and forsaken. Or, sins of action, things we have done. There are also sins thought. Your mind is like a hotel. The manager connot keep someone out of the lobby, but he can keep him from having a room. It is not a sin when some thought passes through your mind. The sin comes when we give it a room in our heart. There are also sins of omission which need to be confessed. There are things we knew to do but did not do. Once we have come clean with God through confession we are now ready for the next season of prayer, The Prayer of thanksgiving(next delivery)
